About Us

Nan and Ted, a Seattle-based couple, have embraced sailing as their latest adventure. After spending five enriching years in Boise, Idaho, supporting the work of Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF.org), they returned to their roots in the Pacific Northwest.

Together, they have three wonderful adult sons, one amazing daughter-in-law, and two dopey dogs who add joy to their lives. With a love for exploration and learning, as well as a deep connection to the water, Nan and Ted are excited to share their sailing experiences, favorite destinations, and the lessons they learn along the way.

Nan (the Adventurous)

Nan is a writer, working on a novel series and as a freelance editor/proofreader. She loves to read, cook, and have good conversations. Learning new things is her favorite! Her greatest delight is spending time with her family, whether on the boat or on land. She tries not to wring her hands too much about seeing her children move into adulthood. A recovering middle-school English teacher, Nan is excited to continue her writing in the context of the digital nomad lifestyle.

Ted (the Planner)

Ted has held various leadership positions in technology-related fields for over 25 years. Now on an open-ended sabbatical, he’s diving into learning more about sailing and marine systems.  He’s looking forward to exploring Puget Sound with aspirations to explore more distant horizons.

Applying his project management and tech integration skills to the sailing expedition, Ted occasionally faces challenges with the time some seemingly simple projects take. Yet, he’s trying to see each hurdle as a part of his growth and development journey.  Embracing new skills such as learning marine systems and digital storytelling, Ted is dedicated to expanding his horizons and making the most of his time and health.

Crescendo

Crescendo is a 51 ½’ Island Packet 485, cutter-rigged sailboat, built in 2007 at the Island Packet facility near St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida. As a center cockpit boat, she features a single wheel at the helm, positioned forward and enclosed in a canvas cover, making it comfortable to pilot in any weather. Crescendo has spent her life, up until now, in the waters of Puget Sound but is a sturdy lady with a full keel and large tanks. We hold our plans very loosely, but we hope to take her offshore to explore Mexico and beyond.

The Journey

Neither of us were born sailors. In fact, we’ve only been sailing a handful of times. Over the years, we’ve owned a couple of boats and taught many people how to waterski or wake surf. Our love of boating grew with time spent on Ted’s folks’ power cruiser. A few years ago, facing some health setbacks and a looming empty nest, we started thinking about our next chapter.

We both enjoy travel and the water, and we wanted to explore in a way that was kinder to the planet, so sailing seemed like a perfect plan. We don’t know where this journey will take us or for how long, but we hope you come along and enjoy the adventure with us!
