I don’t think Nan would argue if I said that she loves baseball. I know she and her whole family wouldn’t disagree if I said one of her older brothers really likes baseball. Enough so that Nan, myself, her brother and a friend took a flight to Boston, rented a car, and proceeded to make a four hour drive to Cooperstown, NY arriving around 2am ET. Why? To visit the Baseball Hall of Fame of course!
I like baseball and all, but I clearly was the least knowledgeable of the four of us as we toured the hallowed halls of the Hall of Fame. But, it was a welcome change from the chaos that has been all consuming the past few months. To shift from celebrating our middle son’s college graduation, another son and his wife buying their first home, our youngest starting his sophomore year of college, and Nan and I preparing to sell our house, packing, storing, selling, giving away, and otherwise trying to pare our belongings down that used to fill a 3 bedroom house so we could start another chapter of our lives aboard our “little” sailboat had been exhausting. To then step into a little sleepy town like Cooperstown where the shops started closing down around 4pm was a little disorientating, but also refreshing. In my mind we were in NY. Isn’t this the place that never sleeps? I guess that’s just the big city life. The pressure of “what are we going to do tonight” in this little town was absent because, well, frankly, there was nothing to do at night.
After two days in Cooperstown, we drove back to Boston and took in a game at Fenway Park. Even I felt the holy ground on which we were standing and was in awe gawking opposite the Green Monster in left field.
Nan’s brother and friend returned back to their respective lives and Nan and I chose to hang around Boston for a few days longer. I mean, I’m married to a former High School History teacher. You can’t be in Boston and not explore some of the history here.
So, if you’ve been wondering what we’ve been up to, and where we’ve been, and why we haven’t posted anything about sailing recently, now you’re caught up. Stay tuned. We do have some updates to share soon about some work we’ve very recently had done on Crescendo to help make her more self-sufficient and off-grid capable. We’ll be back in the Seattle area in about a week and we’ll share more soon after that.
