Good morning Bahia San Carlos! Our destination today is Bahia Guaymas, Sonora, just around the bend to the right.
Uneventful overnight sail (no wind, so no actual sailing) and we’re arriving tired but excited to see a new area of Mexico!

It was a supremely quiet night in Puerto Don Juan. All is well with the Crescendo crew. Thanks for all the well wishes, good vibes and prayers.

The wind is just beginning to pick up here in Puerto Don Juan. We are secure. Decks are cleared, things are lashed down and windage reduced wherever we can. We’re predicted to stay on the edge of the hurricane here, so we should be just fine. Thanks all for your concern, thoughts and prayers. ...

We are all tucked up safely in Puerto Don Juan (see second picture) awaiting the arrival of Polo Sunday night/Monday. It’s beginning to look like we’re completely out of the affected area. Thanks to all who are praying for us and for the people of Mexico. ...

Another overnight journey…
Ted speaking here from the helm:
Tonight, instead of heading toward a beautiful new anchorage in paradise to snorkel with whale sharks and tropical fish, we’re driving it like we stole it and making tracks for a hideout like we just robbed a candy store.
There’s a beautiful full moon tonight. I forgive it for washing out most of the stars because it’s also lighting up the water enough for me to see the swells before they occasionally crash over our bow or send salty spray my way.
Normally, I love the 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. watch. There’s something incredible about being alone at the helm in the middle of the night. Far from cities and light pollution, the stars remind me of how I imagine God originally designed the world to be experienced.
Tonight, though, the moon stole most of them.
Oddly enough, I’m not anxious because I’m sailing at night. I’m not worried about being alone at the helm, deep water, rocky headlands, or even our compromised engine needing a mechanic’s TLC.
I’m anxious because, in a little over two days, Hurricane Polo is expected to cross Baja south of us.
This is our first hurricane rodeo.
We’re heading for a well-known hurricane hole, but so are a lot of other sailboats. And there’s an old saying among sailors:
You’re only as safe as the boat anchored next to you.
That’s a humbling thought.
Thankfully, we have incredible mentors who know these waters, friends already waiting there, and a cruising community full of people who will give their time, tools, spare parts, food, or whatever else another sailor needs.
For now, the bow points north, the moon lights the way, and we keep moving… hopefully toward safer waters.

Hurricane Polo alert: Starting our +/-24hr run from Santa Rosalia to Puerto Don Juan to avoid Hurricane Polo. 3-4’ seas and wind right on the nose-at least until around 3AM when it should die down some.
Praying for peace, the storm to downgrade itself, for a good journey and room in the hurricane hole of Don Juan once we arrive tomorrow evening.
Full moonrise over the Sea of Cortez at Santa Rosalía

Thank you to everyone who has checked in about Hurricane Polo and Crescendo. Here’s our plan for Marco-ing Polo. #hurricanepolo #HurricanePolo ...

Red sky at night, sailors delight! I remember learning that rhyme when I was a kid and sailing was a thing in books.
Last night we motored down from San Francisquito to Santa Rosalía to do some provisioning before we decide which direction to run from Hurricane Polo 🌀
Weather models haven’t entirely coalesced into a unified prediction, so it’s still a bit up in the air. Run North? Run South to Puerto Escondido (the safest storm hole in Mexico?) Or cross over to Guaymas. Big decisions coming in the next couple of days.
If you’re a praying person, we’d appreciate your prayers.

Caught a dorado/mahi-mahi just after sailing through a pod of dolphins! We haven’t caught a lot of fish, just using a cedar plug on a 125’ hand line off the back of the boat. Tasty dinner once we get to San Francisquito!

Guys. Guys. So many young whale sharks in our little neighborhood today! No good pictures (the dark spot in the water is a small one), but easily 10 or more, 10’-20’ long youngsters. Got t to swim with several.
Lots of other cruisers have come into our neighborhood as well, and several Mexican whale sharks tour boats. Really fun to share the experience with others. My favorite was hearing a tourist climbing back in their boat whoop, “Graaaaciaaaas, Diioooos!!” (‘Thank you, God!!’ Credit where credit is due, and all that.) 😁 #whalesharkencounter #bahialosangeles

Nearly every day of August we’ve had over 100 degree temperatures here in the Sea of Cortez. Nights sometimes get down to the mid ‘80’s, but are more often in the low ‘90’s. Crescendo is outfitted for the northern latitudes, so she’s got a great hydronic heating system, but no built in AC-and no easy way to run ducting for one.
So this has been our solution, and it’s almost adequate!
(In related news, we may be looking for house sitting opportunities for next summer. 😆)

Ted made a video using his Insta 360 camera on a stick. It was a pretty cool morning! Today we paddle boarded out into the bay, and we saw a LOT of whale sharks, one of them close to 30’ long! No video today, but we captured my first swim with one. Enjoy! ...

Hurricane holes are marked with a 🌀on sailing apps, and are long established safe spots for anchoring in big weather. New as I am to sailing, anchoring well is super important to me. Yesterday was a windy one, and I kinda pushed to come in here for a good night’s sleep. Got one, too. 😁 ...

Left San Juanico this morning, headed north to Bahia Concepción. Insurance says we need to be north of latitude 27 from June 1-Nov 1. Something about hurricanes. ...

When you’re a month from a trip to the states and your decade plus old #keen_shoes finally give up, it’s time to pull out the sewing kit and make it work. These puppies have been Ted’s go-to kicks forever. Replacements will happen, but for now, sail thread and a piece of strapping is going to do the job. #sewing #sailinglife ...

Crescendo is in Puerto Escondido and heading out in the morning for Puerto Balandra. Tonight is the party and captain`s meeting for the six annual local fishing tournament. Boats here from Cabo and further. So many giant expensive, decked out fishing boats in the marina all jazzed up to go fishing in the morning.Fortunately the chaos will start well before we leave the marina in the morning. Fishing tournaments are hard core and starting around 5:30am. Us, we`ll take our own sweet time heading up to our next anchorage. 😊 😴 ...

This is what our anchor time in Los Gatos the last few days looks like. The yellow line on the right depicts our track into the anchorage. The red/yellow lines show how our boat swung around the anchor depending on how the tide, current, and wind pushed the boat around. You can see at the top how we were pushed further out to the extension of our anchor chain we had out (5.5:1 scope for those who know) during the heavier winds. ...

Los Gatos, Baja California Sur. So remote, Meta doesn’t have a location tag for here. Water so clear we can see the anchor, and only one other boat.
There’s a windstorm coming tonight, but we’ve got a big anchor, and we can see that it’s well set.
